फिलहाल वैज्ञानिक चाहते थे कि किलो वजन को पेरिस में रखे मिश्रित धातु के सिलेंडर से नापने की बजाए किसी प्राकृतिक भार को नापने की इकाई बना दिया जाए, और ये इकाई है 'प्लांक कॉन्सटैंट'. वैज्ञानिक जल्द ही किलोग्राम के आदर्श वजन को दर्शाने का नया तरीका ढूंढने वाले हैं.

अमेरिका के नेशनल इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ स्टैंडर्ड एंड टेक्नोलॉजी (एनआईएसटी) के जीना कुब्रायच का कहना है कि किलो के स्टैंडर्ड भार को दर्शाने के लिए जिस धातु का इस्तेमाल किया जाता है, वो गोल्फ की बॉल के बराबर ऊंचा एक सिलेंडर है, जिसे एक छोटे से कांच के बक्से में रखा गया है. वे बाताते हैं कि इसकी देख-रेख में काफी संसाधनों का इस्तेमाल किया जाता है और इसके बाद भी इनके नष्ट होने का खतरा बना रहता है. अगर ये नष्ट हो गया तो दुनिया के पास किलो के सटीक भार को दर्शाने के लिए कोई पैमाना नहीं बचेगा. इसलिए एक ऐसा फॉर्मूला तैयार किया जा रहा है जिसके नष्ट होने का डर ही न हो.
